Gerhard Liska, USP-D Senior Consultant, presented his findings on personal transformation processes in leadership development on the 9th International ISL Symposium on Sustainable Leadership in Salzburg this year.
His approach follows a developmental perspective. The human capacity for meaning making and logic reasoning thus develops through successive stages over the life span. Self observation skills thereby are crucial in supporting personal transformation processes?
With respect to leadership development self-observation and sustained mindfulness are important as counterparts to a widely cherished one-sided approach to leadership development that mainly focuses on knowledge acquisition.
In his presentation Gerhard Liska focused on three important self-observation techniques, namely introspection, mindfulness and emotion regulation. The first two concentrate on mental schemes and patterns, the latter one deals with emotions and emotional arousal.
The core benefits of regular self observation are: Becoming more aware of one’s internal dynamics and thinking patterns, strengthening self-regulatory skills and broadening the ability for meta-reflection.
